We all love a beautifully smelling home. It is without a doubt therapeutic for our mind, body, and soul. It helps us relax, ease our anxiety and alleviate our stresses (even for a brief moment) from the everyday hustle in life. But is that all there is to Aromatherapy?

Let's find out.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy, by definition, is a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Often, it’s called essential oil therapy. (Source: Healthline)

How does it work?

Aromatherapy works in two different ways. The most well-known way is through the sense of smell. According to research, when the brain is triggered by a smell, it sets off certain reactions in the body. This explains why we (yes, including our furry friends) feel energized with the smell of coffee or relaxed with the smell of Lavender.

Another way is through skin absorption. It has the ability to fight infection or relieve pain as it is absorbed by the skin because, essentially, they have beneficial properties that are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, and so much more.

What are its benefits?

Aromatherapy is known to have therapeutic qualities that relieve stress, boost the immune system, and encourage overall well-being.

Here are several conditions Aromatherapy is thought to help with:

  • Stress - There are certain scents that can trigger a relaxation response in the brain. Best used during a massage.
  • Anxiety - Studies have found that aromatherapy can have a positive effect on those living with anxiety, as a complementary therapy.
  • Insomnia - Having a relaxing scent in your home or adding essential oils to a warm, evening bath can help prepare your body and mind for sleep.
  • Dementia - Research revealed many benefits for conditions such as dementia suggesting that aromatherapy may help treat feelings of agitation.
  • Chronic pain - Aromatherapy is thought to be especially helpful for easing any chronic pain-related anxiety.
  • Cancer - According to Cancer Research UK, many people with cancer turn to Aromatherapy for its ability to reduce pain and anxiety.
  • Palliative care - Aromatherapy massage is becoming increasingly popular in palliative care. The combination of scent and massage is thought to help patients feel more relaxed and comfortable.
  • Keep in mind that there are some essential oils that have side effects which may trigger asthma, rashes, allergic reactions, or skin irritation. Children and/or pregnant and lactating women should use essential oils with caution and under the supervision of a doctor. We always recommend doing your own research to find out what works best for you.

Overall, Aromatherapy, indeed, provides us with countless benefits to help our well-being.
